Thank you once again for organising the Trek bike hire and for the suggested rides in the Pyrenees. You made it very easy.
I had sensational roads, great weather and a mix between challenging climbs and beautiful scenery in the Gaves Valley. I did everything without pre-booking and a small back pack strapped to the rack on the back of the trek.
My route was as follows:
Sunday May 18th – Muret (Toulouse) to St Bertrand de Comminges along the Garonne
Monday May 19th – St Bertrand de Comminges to Bagneres-de-Bigorre via Luchon , Col de Peyresourde and Col d’Aspin. Sensational scenery, great roads and challenging back to back climbs.
Tuesday May 20th – Bagneres-de-Bigorre to Argeles-Gazost via the Col du Tourmalet. Great ride day. Tough climb to too of Tourmalet with route still closed to cars. Ride down the other side in Gaves Valley was challenging due to rain and road works but I enjoyed the challenge. After refuelling in Luz-St-Sauver with a coffee and sandwich I sped down the fast road into Argeles-Gazost where I stayed at your recommendation – the Best Western. They were friendly, helpful, spoke English and had a fantastic well priced restaurant.
Wednesday May 21st – Hautacam. Tough wet conditions on Wednesday but belted out Hautacam. Great ride but very cold at the top. At about 3pm that afternoon the sun came out and blue sky emerged which lasted to Thursday.
Thursday May 22nd – Argeles-Gazost to Lourdes via Col du Soulor and Col des Borderes. Beautiful day. This was some of the best scenery I had. Worth stopping for lunch at the top of Soulor. Good climbs and moderate ascents and descents. I overnighted in Lourdes and took a train back to Toulouse on the Friday.
I have attached some photos. Thanks once again for making the trip so easy and for meeting me at the airport on the Sunday!”
